AMU Kitchen brings traditional Afghan cooking to Arlington’s Langston Boulevard with dishes prepared using fresh ingredients, slow-cooking techniques, and family recipes passed down through generations.

The restaurant is designed to feel warm and welcoming—a place where friends and families can gather around food prepared with care.

For anyone looking to explore more of Arlington’s international dining scene, AMU Kitchen is one to add to the list.

Xi’an Famous Foods — Arlington, Virginia

New York has arrived in Arlington.

What started as a small bubble tea shop in Flushing, Queens—and later a food stall near a bus stop—grew into Xi’an Famous Foods, one of New York City’s recognizable names for the bold flavors of Xi’an cuisine.

Now the family business has expanded beyond New York with a location on Clarendon Boulevard.

Expect hand-pulled biang-biang noodles, dumplings, burgers, liang pi, and dishes featuring the family’s proprietary chili oil made with more than 30 ingredients.

For former New Yorkers living in the DMV, this one may already need no introduction.

Seki Sushi — Arlington, Virginia

Over in National Landing, Seki Sushi adds another option to Arlington’s growing dining scene.

The contemporary restaurant serves sushi, sashimi, rolls, and hot Japanese dishes, but one of its more distinctive experiences is an intimate 13-course omakase at the chef’s counter.

That makes Seki an interesting choice whether you’re stopping in for sushi or looking for something more experiential for date night or a special occasion.

Little Beast — Falls Church, Virginia

Detroit-style pizza fans have another reason to head to Falls Church.

Little Beast serves the thick, crispy-edged pizza style known for balancing a crunchy exterior with a softer interior.

Add wings, cocktails, and a casual atmosphere, and you’ve got the kind of neighborhood spot that can work equally well for a relaxed dinner with friends or an easy family meal.

The Briefing Room Cocktail Lounge — Fort Ritchie, Maryland

This may be one of the more unusual additions to the guide.

The Briefing Room Cocktail Lounge draws inspiration from the history surrounding Fort Ritchie, once home to the U.S. Army’s Military Intelligence Training Center during World War II.

The Velvet Room — Bethesda, Maryland

For something a little more intimate, The Velvet Room adds another cocktail destination to Bethesda.

The experience centers around well-balanced cocktails, generous pours, an extensive whiskey selection, and a cozy atmosphere designed for conversation.

Live music on weekends adds another dimension, making it an option for date night, meeting friends, or simply settling in with a good cocktail.

It’s exactly the kind of place that makes speakeasy hunting fun: what you see from the outside tells only part of the story.

CODE RED — Washington, DC

If you’re looking for something that embraces the spirit of the Prohibition era, CODE RED delivers a modern interpretation of the classic speakeasy.

The experience combines classic cocktails, eclectic cuisine, and an atmosphere inspired by the secretive nightlife of the 1920s.

But shhh…

Maybe don’t tell everybody about this one.

OKPB — Washington, DC

Small. Intimate. And intentionally uncomplicated.

OKPB is a 21+ cocktail bar operating on a first-come, first-seated basis with no reservations.

Parties are limited to six guests, helping preserve the intimate atmosphere. Non-alcoholic cocktails are also available for guests who want the experience without the alcohol.

There isn’t a full food menu beyond nuts, so come for the cocktails and atmosphere rather than dinner.

Medina — Washington, DC

Not every hidden experience needs a refrigerator door.

Medina offers an intimate neighborhood cocktail experience inspired by the islands of the Mediterranean.

Beneath its tented roof, guests can enjoy craft cocktails, wine, and food in a setting designed for conversation and discovery—with a few surprises waiting beyond what first meets the eye.

Allegory — Washington, DC

Hidden inside Eaton DC’s Progress Library, Allegory may be one of the most distinctive cocktail experiences in the city.

The start of a new school year may mean summer vacation is winding down, but there’s still plenty of time for one more family adventure.

Fair season is here across the DMV.

From Ferris wheels and midway games to funnel cakes, livestock shows, live entertainment, tractor pulls, and good old-fashioned fair food, county and state fairs offer something for almost every age.

That’s why we’re highlighting some of the region’s upcoming fairs in Bhlen’s Seasonal Celebrations & Family Fun Guide, making it easier to see what’s happening across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia as we head toward the end of summer and the beginning of fall.

Whether you’re going for the rides, the food, the animals, or simply the tradition, here are some fairs to put on your calendar.

Arlington County Fair

August 12–16 | Arlington, Virginia

We’re starting close to home with the Arlington County Fair, one of the largest free events on the East Coast.

Held at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center, the fair brings together carnival rides, midway games, food and drinks, shopping, live performances, children’s activities, and plenty of free entertainment.

For Arlington families, it’s a great way to squeeze in some summer fun just as everyone starts thinking about heading back to school.

Montgomery County Agricultural Fair

August 14–22 | Gaithersburg, Maryland

The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair combines the excitement of the midway with the traditions of an agricultural fair.

Expect carnival rides, games, livestock, 4-H activities, demonstrations, entertainment, exhibits, and plenty to explore throughout the fairgrounds. Kids ages 11 and under receive free admission, making this an especially appealing option for families looking for a full day—or evening—of fun.

Maryland State Fair

If one weekend isn’t enough, the Maryland State Fair gives you three.

Anne Arundel County Fair

September 16–20 | Crownsville, Maryland

The Anne Arundel County Fair packs five days with more than 100 scheduled events.

Families can experience carnival rides, live animals, homegrown and homemade exhibits, tractor pulls, pie-eating contests, pig races, concerts, and even dinosaur and firefighting shows in 2026.

Charles County Fair

September 17–20 | La Plata, Maryland

Celebrating its 102nd year, the Charles County Fair continues a Southern Maryland tradition with livestock shows, agricultural exhibits, competitions, demonstrations, children’s activities, and entertainment.

The Great Frederick Fair

Frederick, Maryland

The Great Frederick Fair combines family entertainment with a larger mission centered around agricultural education and youth development.

It’s an opportunity for families to enjoy the fun of fair season while children get an up-close look at farming, agriculture, animals, and the traditions that continue to play an important role in communities throughout the region.

St. Mary’s County Fair

Leonardtown, Maryland

Held each September, the St. Mary’s County Fair celebrates community, agriculture, and local tradition.

The volunteer-run fair features livestock, home arts, 4-H competitions, exhibits, and other activities that give families an opportunity to experience a classic Southern Maryland county fair.

State Fair of Virginia

September 25–October 4 | Doswell, Virginia

If you’re willing to make the drive, the State Fair of Virginia provides a big finish to fair season.

Running from September 25 through October 4, the fair features a combination of thrilling midway rides, kid-friendly attractions, exhibits, entertainment, and classic fair traditions.

Calvert County Fair

Prince Frederick, Maryland

The Calvert County Fair has been a Southern Maryland tradition since 1887.

What the 2026 Higher Education Employee Well-Being Symposium Taught Us About the Attendee Experience

The 2026 Higher Education Employee Well-Being Symposium, held at Virginia Tech’s Academic Building One in Alexandria, Virginia, brought together higher education professionals committed to improving employee well-being through collaboration, innovation, and shared learning.

While the educational sessions were at the heart of the symposium, one lesson stood out to us: the attendee experience extends far beyond the conference agenda.

Every conference carefully curates recommendations for attendees—restaurants, coffee shops, networking locations, and local attractions—but those recommendations are often delivered as static PDFs, printed brochures, or email attachments. Once attendees arrive, they’re left to copy addresses into Google Maps, compare search results, and figure out where everything is on their own.

For this symposium, the organizers took a different approach.

Working together, we transformed their curated recommendations into a mobile-friendly digital guide (2026 HEEW Symposium Local Recommendations) that attendees could access before, during, and after the event. The result wasn’t just easier access to information—it created a more connected conference experience.

A Curated Guide That Attendees Actually Used

One of the most rewarding parts of the symposium was the feedback we received from attendees.

The guide wasn’t treated like another conference resource that gets opened once and forgotten. People continued using it throughout the week because it supported different needs at different times.

Some attendees used it to find nearby restaurants between sessions.

Others explored coffee shops before the day’s programming began.

Many continued using the guide after the conference each evening to discover Alexandria and the surrounding area.

The versatility of the guide was one of its greatest strengths. Rather than serving a single purpose, it became a companion throughout the attendee journey.

Why Human Curation Matters

One observation became increasingly clear throughout the symposium.

People weren’t looking for another list generated from search results.

They wanted recommendations they could trust.

Every location featured in the guide had been intentionally selected by the symposium organizers because it contributed to the attendee experience.

Instead of sending attendees a static list and expecting them to spend time searching Google, comparing locations, and reading reviews, the symposium’s curated recommendations were transformed into an interactive experience that was immediately useful.

Technology didn’t decide where attendees should go.

It simply made the organizers’ recommendations easier to discover.

That’s the difference between intelligent discovery and generic search.

One Guide. Multiple Uses.

Another feature attendees appreciated was how the guide evolved throughout the symposium.

For the Wednesday evening networking dinner, the featured restaurant was pinned to the top of the guide, making it the first location attendees saw when they opened it.

There was no confusion about where the event was taking place.

Once the dinner concluded, the guide continued serving attendees throughout the remainder of the symposium.

Whether someone wanted lunch between sessions, a nearby coffee shop, or a local restaurant after the day’s programming ended, the same guide continued delivering value without requiring attendees to search elsewhere.

One guide supported multiple moments throughout the event.

Extending Sponsor Visibility Beyond the Exhibit Hall

One of the biggest successes of the guide wasn’t related to restaurants at all.

It was the symposium sponsors.

Organizations including Virginia Credit Union, Functional Lifestyle, Invest 529, and the CUPA-HR Virginia Chapter were featured directly within the guide, giving them visibility before, during, and after the symposium.

As attendees explored restaurants and local recommendations, they could also learn more about each sponsor and visit their websites with a single tap.

An important insight emerged during the event.

Not everyone enjoys walking up to a sponsor table and introducing themselves.

Some attendees prefer to learn independently before deciding whether to engage in conversation.

The guide gave those attendees another way to discover sponsor organizations while giving sponsors additional exposure that extended well beyond exhibit hours.

Instead of existing only inside the conference venue, sponsor visibility became part of the overall attendee experience.

The Future of Higher Education Conferences Is Better Discovery

The 2026 Higher Education Employee Well-Being Symposium reinforced something we’ve believed for years.

Conference organizers already know the best restaurants, gathering places, sponsors, and local experiences for their attendees.

The challenge isn’t creating those recommendations.

The challenge is delivering them in a way that’s intuitive, engaging, and useful throughout the entire event.

When curated information is transformed into an interactive digital experience, attendees spend less time searching and more time connecting—with the conference, the destination, local businesses, and event sponsors.

That’s exactly what Bhlen witnessed in Alexandria.

As higher education conferences continue looking for ways to improve the attendee experience without adding complexity, transforming curated information into intelligent discovery may be one of the simplest and most impactful improvements an event can make.

Because the best conferences don’t end when the sessions are over—they continue everywhere attendees choose to explore.

There’s something special about visiting Jamaica for the first time.

The warm hospitality. The incredible food. The turquoise waters. The music. The culture. The pace of life.

For many travelers, it’s a destination they’ve dreamed about for years.

But like visiting any country for the first time, there are a few things that can make your trip smoother, more affordable, and ultimately more enjoyable.

After spending time in Jamaica and speaking with fellow travelers along the way, we wanted to share a few lessons we learned that we hope will help make your first visit even better.

Choose the Vacation That Fits Your Travel Style

If it’s your first trip to Jamaica, an all-inclusive resort is often a great place to start.

Why?

Because it removes many of the logistics that first-time international travelers don’t always think about.

Meals are readily available.

Drinks are included.

The beach is steps away.

Entertainment is often scheduled throughout the day and evening.

If you forgot sunscreen, toiletries, or another essential item, many resorts have on-site shops where you can quickly pick up what you need.

Perhaps most importantly, you won’t feel like you constantly have to leave the property just to find breakfast, lunch, dinner, or something to do.

That doesn’t mean an all-inclusive resort is the only option.

If you’re looking for a more local experience, consider staying at a boutique hotel that’s within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. Being able to explore the surrounding community on foot can provide a completely different perspective on Jamaica while reducing your reliance on transportation.

The right choice simply depends on the type of vacation you’re looking for.

Plan Your Transportation Before You Arrive

Transportation is one of the easiest ways to overspend on a vacation if you don’t plan ahead.

Before arriving in Jamaica, ask your hotel about airport transportation options.

Then compare those options with licensed transportation providers online.

Having a plan before your flight lands can save both time and money.

It’s also worth knowing that transportation works differently than it does in many U.S. cities.

While Uber operates in limited areas such as Kingston and Montego Bay, it isn’t nearly as widespread as travelers may be accustomed to. In most tourist destinations and for airport transfers, licensed local taxi services remain the primary option.

Understanding that before you arrive helps set the right expectations.

Compare Airport Transportation Prices

During our trip, we met another couple who paid approximately $150 USD for round-trip airport transportation in a private vehicle for a hotel located less than five miles from the airport.

Our experience was very different.

We paid approximately $20 USD one way, including a $5 tip, for a similar trip.

The point isn’t that one service was right or wrong.

It’s simply a reminder that transportation prices can vary significantly.

Before booking, take a few minutes to compare options, read reviews, or ask multiple transportation providers for quotes.

A little research before your trip can go a long way.

Understand the Currency

It’s also helpful to familiarize yourself with Jamaica’s currency before you arrive.

At the time of writing, one U.S. dollar is worth approximately 150 Jamaican dollars.

Knowing the approximate exchange rate makes it much easier to understand prices and compare costs throughout your trip.

While many tourist businesses accept U.S. dollars and credit cards, understanding the local currency gives you additional confidence when making purchases.

Don’t Feel Like You Have to Do Everything

A colorful vintage Volkswagen bar captures Jamaica’s laid-back spirit, reminding travelers that some of the island’s best experiences begin with slowing down, connecting, and embracing the local vibe.

This may be the most important advice we can offer.

Many first-time visitors try to fit everything into one vacation.

Waterfalls.

Catamaran cruises.

ATV tours.

River rafting.

Ziplining.

Shopping.

Nightlife.

Photography.

Beach time.

Before long, every day is scheduled from sunrise until sunset.

The result?

You come home needing another vacation.

Excursions are a wonderful part of visiting Jamaica, but they also require time.

Many tours involve picking up guests from multiple resorts before heading to the destination, meaning a single excursion can take up most of your day.

Leave room in your itinerary to simply enjoy where you are.

Watch the sunset.

Relax by the pool.

Spend an afternoon at the beach.

Have an unplanned conversation with someone new.

Sometimes those moments become the memories you treasure most.

Remember, Jamaica isn’t going anywhere.

You can always come back.

Let Someone Else’s Experience Become Your Starting Point

We’ve Been Thinking About Smart Cities All Wrong

For years, the conversation around smart cities has focused on technology.

Connected traffic signals. Intelligent transportation systems. Public Wi-Fi. Environmental sensors. Artificial intelligence. Data analytics.

But what if we’ve been asking the wrong question?

Instead of asking, “How can technology make cities smarter?” perhaps we should also be asking:

These are some of the most common questions travelers ask, yet they’re often the hardest to answer—not because the information doesn’t exist, but because it’s scattered across dozens of websites, apps, brochures, social media pages, and printed materials.

The city may be smart.

But the visitor experience is often fragmented.

The Missing Layer

Every city already has a digital presence.

Tourism websites.

Community calendars.

Hotel recommendation lists.
