In an area as diverse as the DMV, there are endless ways to celebrate Black history month throughout February and all year long. From casual lunch offerings to upscale dining experiences, Black restaurateurs are serving up delicious meals that showcase the unique, vibrant heritage of African-Americans. Bhlen is a proud supporter of Black businesses–check out our dynamic list of Black-Owned businesses near you!

The Continent DC (Downtown)
For a truly one-of-a-kind upscale experience, check out the upscale West African restaurant, The Continent DC. From the decor to the music to unforgettable food, the founders are executing a vision of authenticity true to the continent of Africa. Part of their menu is aptly titled “Back Home” and offers hard-to-find staples such as Liberian Cassava Leaf and Spicy Goat Pepper Soup. The Continent serves up amazing specials on classics like jollof rice and chicken suya for their daily happy hour, and they are also known for offering a wide array of delicious, refreshing cocktails. Come join Bhlen to celebrate Black History Month at The Continent DC on Thursday, February 20 from 3-7 PM. DJ Ty One will be creating a vibe with his one-of-a-kind remixes, and the bar will be serving a happy hour to remember.

saladworks (Union Market)
saladworks–aka the original salad entree restaurant–started as a humble salad shop in Cherry Hill, NJ in 1986. To say the salad-eating movement caught on would be an understatement. Now they have eateries in 23 states and the District of Columbia and they offer over 60 salad ingredients to create a flavor as unique as your cravings. In addition to their signature build-your-own salads, they serve wraps, paninis, and soups. The DC restaurant is located in the NoMa district of Washington DC, near Union Market, and owner Clifford Lovett could not be prouder of this thriving business. Come join Bhlen at saladworks on February 13 from 4pm to 8pm to celebrate Black History month with a healthy, delicious meal.

Ben’s Chili Bowl (U Street and other locations)
This history of Black entrepreneurs in DC would be incomplete without mentioning Ben’s Chili Bowl. The spot opened in an old silent movie house in 1958 by Ben Ali and Virginia Rollins, who married each other just 7 weeks later. When it opened, U Street was known locally as “Black Broadway,” and many jazz legends stopped in to eat at Ben’s Chili Bowl when they were performing nearby. It has remained a mainstay, surviving civil unrest following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the construction of the U Street Metro, which forced many nearby businesses to close. Ben passed away in 2009, and the restaurant has since been run by his sons, who have gone on to open new locations, including one in Nats Park and an upscale restaurant/bar called Ben’s Next Door.

Georgia Brown’s (Downtown DC)
True to its southern name, Georgia Brown’s combines the style and class of a club straight out of New Orleans during the jazz age (and it has a grand piano to prove it). It opened in 1993, and has made a name as a perfect place to impress a date. The menu offers the real deal as far as soul food goes, from catfish to fried green tomatoes. Check out live music every Wednesday and the first Friday of every month from 7-10 PM.

Negus Winery (Alexandria, Virginia)
Negus Winery is an Ethiopian-owned Winery, Meadery, and Tasting Room–in fact, it is the first and only honey wine tasting room in the US. Master winemaker Gize Negussie was formerly a successful beermaker, brewing beers inspired by his homeland. When the pandemic hit, he began experimenting with creating Tej (honey wine). With his mother’s help, he worked to preserve the traditional craft of making honey wine while infusing it with modern twists. After opening in fall 2023, Negus Winery, Meadery, and Tasting Room is now open to guests to enjoy tastings and flights, and an array of bottles of honey wine are available for purchase.

So your bar/restaurant is doing great and you have eye-popping numbers on the busiest nights of the week. Holiday weekends and big sporting events have also added to your success. But, wouldn’t it be great if you can take your business to the next level and reach markets and demographics that would normally break your marketing budget?

Great news: This can be accomplished easier and more affordable than you imagined!

Planning the right “out of the box” restaurant/bar promotions will have your business’s name and a vision of your logo on the minds of everyone in the immediate area.

This article will help identify the following:

Popular bar/restaurant promotions

When to start planning

Our Niche

How Bhlen.com can help you reach that next level

Customized options

Depending on your venue’s demographic area, the right bar promotion idea(s) will bring in consistent foot traffic from locals and frequent visitors.

Popular bar/restaurant promotions.

Let’s start off with one of the most popular promotions, Happy Hour. Who doesn’t love happy hour? Happy Hour is a great way to grab the attention of different types of customers. Some well-known establishments can be pricey and therefor attract a demographic of patrons with disposable income. Not everyone can spend a couple hundred dollars on dinner, but a Happy Hour special will easily gain the attention of your young professionals with a smaller budget. Most Happy Hour specials allow individuals to experience food and drinks at the bar for an affordable price.

Great promotions are the key to driving traffic toward your venue(s) on less busy days. Along with more traffic being directed to your establishment, a consistent promotion will help you stand out amongst your competitors. Happy Hours are a great way to display your signature drinks and food items. Promotions are also good way to get the community talking about your establishment. Beer and drink specials will certainly capture the attention of local college students looking to get the most for their money.

Bhlen’s unique platform can showcase your Happy Hour promotion and other popular promotions, such as Trivia Night, Karaoke, Open Mic, Comedy Shows and many more with exceptional results. Although we will host your promotions on our platform, we will continuously redirect traffic back to your website by encouraging patrons to visit your website for more details and operating hours.

When to start planning

Happy Hours are not that difficult to plan, but if you live in areas that receive heavy foot traffic from tourism, conferences, and yearly festivals; you would want to have a plan in place to reach those audiences. This is where Bhlen can help.

Bhlen will help you plan your bar/restaurant promotions

With our unique “out of the box” marketing strategy and categories, we will help you reach the right group of patrons.

A few category examples include but not limited to:

Rooftop Bars

Patio

LGBTQ Friendly

Views (waterfronts, skylines, etc.)

Black-Owned

Bhlen starts planning ahead of schedule, so you don’t have to. Generally, you would want to give yourself a few months of planning and execution to reach audiences traveling to your city for annual events, but our platform allows us to add you to our promotional efforts at any time. These are visitors that you may not normally have access to but through Bhlen’s partnerships, unique marketing and continuously growth strategy, you will gain access to a whole new consumer base.

No more stressing about how to reach individuals during annual events because Bhlen has a calendar planned out for the year identifying moments that will help your venue gain attention from the annual tourists visiting the area. Whether you’re a well-known establishment or your local mom and pop venue, our boots on the ground approach will help you reach those thousands of visitors in town for the Tech Conference, Food or Music Festival and Holiday Events.

Our Niche

During large events Bhlen’s marketing will stand out by grouping any participating bars/restaurant into one category that will allow their patrons to see all the venues on a map, with web links to that venue. This equips everyone with easy access on their phone allowing them to have this information at all times. This marketing technique has become extremely popular with Restaurant Weeks across the country. Instead of viewing a list of Bar & Restaurants on a website, our technology will show you the closest one near you based on the GPS location.

With our unique methods of marketing, Bhlen will have similar list throughout the year. For example, Black-Owned Bar & Restaurants during Black History Month (February), Wineries and Wine Bar during the Spring Wine Season, LGBTQ Friendly venues during Pride Month and Rooftop Bars and Patios during the summer. The mentioned list along with many others will help any venue reach a demographic they may not have been able to accomplish on their own. We incorporate those list on our social media posts, flyers in popular apartment buildings and businesses, along with email blasts. On occasion, local writers and radio coverage pick up our promotions.

Our Niche has worked well for the organizer hosting these events because our platform can be use as an additional revenue stream. Please contact us for more information and demos.

Restaurant Week

Every year hundreds of cities across the United States host a restaurant week to offer reduced or discounted menus, so customers can try different types of food that may normally be out of their price range. Most of these promotions offer a prix fixe menu which offers a full course meals for customers at fixed price. Our platform has the ability to group venues into one category (Restaurant Week) for customers to view and explore on their smartphones. For example, we grouped over 150 participating restaurants/bars for our client to be displayed collectively, so all viewers could see which venues were participating during that event. We then utilized a geolocation feature so all patrons were able to see which venues closest to them were participating during “Restaurant Week”. In addition, we essentially cross promoted the “Restaurant Week” host by redirecting all patrons who use our website/app back to the host website for more information about the event and/or restaurant details.

Bar/Pub Crawls

Let’s be honest, everyone has experienced a bar/pub crawl at one point in their life. Crawls have been very popular in cities with awesome sports fans, college students and young professionals. Bar/pub crawls are normally celebrated during the holidays so you may have seen people walking around with St. Patrick’s Day themed clothing or dressed in their favorite costume during halloween. Bar/Pub crawls are a good way to promote your venue to hundreds of patrons at once. On our platform, we grouped 8 venues into one category (Bar/Pub Crawl) for customers to view and explore on their smartphones. All viewers were able to see which venues were participating during that event. We then utilized a geolocation feature so all patrons were able to see which venues closest to them were participating during the Bar/Pub Crawl.

Progressive Dinner – Restaurant Edition

Our platform has the ability to group venues into one category (Progressive Dinner) for customers to view and explore on their smartphones. For example, we grouped 5 participating restaurants for our client to be displayed collectively, so all viewers could see which venues were participating during that event. This event was a new concept that we developed which included 5 different restaurants who hosted drinks and appetizers at one location, followed by first course, the main course, dessert and ending with drinks and a DJ at the last location. This concept can be executed during any time of the year in professional/casual attire or with a theme like valentine’s Day.

Custom Itineraries for Large Conferences

On a weekly basis in cities across the United States, large conferences are being held at hotels and conference centers. Hundreds to thousands or people are in attendance, usually in a city they are unfamiliar with. Our research has shown that the majority of the people in attendance for conferences are also there to explore the city hosting the conference. With that said, our platform has demonstrated that we can provide a customized list of restaurants, bar, tourist attractions and other venues group together for the conference attendees. Depending on the demographics of the group, we can cater the list to match the attendees interest in any city across the globe. We negotiate discounts with several of these venues which will entice patrons to indulge in new experiences. This was a game changer for clients because our platform provides analytics to show what these patrons liked to do outside of the conference schedule. These results allowed the host to duplicate the same list of interest for the same conference in a new city the following year. Our platform provides the host with new opportunities for new sponsorships, freeing up space within the conference brochure. You would no longer have to display a map of hot spots throughout the city because we will have everything in a digital map for your phone.

Nightclub Owners with Multiple Venues

This is a big deal for the cities Vegas, Los Angeles and Miami. Our platform has the ability to group your various club nights into one group for promotions. we will provide you with a link for your patrons, it can then be converted into a QR code and your patrons will never have to visit multiple websites again to see what events are planned for the upcoming weekend. We can group all of the venues information together and guest will be able to choose what they like based on day of the week, time of day and/or themes. By using the geolocation feature on our platform, guest able to see which venues closest are closest to them. In most of these cities, visitors do not rent cars and they depend on public transportation, ride share and walking. Anyone who uses our website/app platform are redirected to the nightclubs website to gather additional information, purchase tickets and find directions.

Colleges and Universities

Millions of student enroll and attend college all across the country every semester. You have some attending for the first time in undergrad, some in graduate school and other online. No matter their enrollment status, each and every student are entitled to discounts offered around the city and beyond to college students. With that said, our platform will group all of the businesses in that college town and beyond to display information on the discount percentages available. This information can then be provided to students at orientation, plus in and around the college campus. This will give the businesses consistent views from student searching for discounts, which would lead to other businesses joining the list. This will become an additional revenue stream for the college or university while boosting the local economy for local businesses.
