There’s something special about New York City during the holiday season. The energy feels elevated, the streets buzz with celebration, and food becomes an experience all its own. This year, the Bhlen team had the opportunity to join the Chelsea Market & The High Line Food and Culture Walking Tour, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip.

What made the experience even more memorable was how easy and affordable it was to travel from Arlington, VA to NYC on the Vamoose bus, even during the Christmas holiday season. The trip was smooth, accessible, and well worth it for everything we were able to experience once we arrived.

A Tour That’s So Much More Than Food

From the moment we met our guide, Cindy, we knew we were in for something special. Cindy was absolutely amazing. She made us laugh throughout the tour, kept everyone engaged, and had an incredible way of bringing history, culture, and food together into one seamless experience.

She didn’t just tell us where to eat. She taught us why these places matter.

We learned about how Chelsea Market was once the Nabisco Bakery, where the iconic Oreo cookie was first created, and how a steam engine train once ran directly through the market’s main corridor. Cindy explained how the building has evolved over time, including what companies like Google are now doing with the space, while still preserving its rich industrial roots.

As we made our way through the market, Cindy guided us through a carefully curated lineup of tastings, each with its own story and cultural significance.

The Food: A True Culinary Journey

The tour included a perfect mix of seated tastings and on-the-go bites, allowing us to sample a wide range of flavors without ever feeling rushed. Highlights included:

- Filaga Pizzeria – Bufalina Sicilian pizza that was rich, comforting, and perfectly crisp

- Dickson’s Farmstand Meats – A house-made hot dog that truly lived up to its reputation

- Buon Italia – A rustic Italian crostata that felt straight out of a family kitchen

- Takumi Taco – Japanese curry and beef tacos that blended cultures in the best way

- Saxelby Cheesemongers – Artisanal cheese paired with sweet fig

- Sarabeth’s – A buttery biscuit with award-winning jams

- L’Arte del Gelato – Creamy gelato that was the perfect finish

- Chelsea Market Baskets – Leonidas chocolates to cap it all off

Every stop felt intentional, and Cindy made sure we understood the origins of the food, the people behind it, and why each vendor mattered to the neighborhood.

Walking Through History on the High Line

After exploring Chelsea Market, we headed outside for a walk along the High Line, a beautifully designed elevated park that was once part of a busy railroad system. Cindy shared the story of the Meatpacking District and how it transformed into a vibrant hub for restaurants, hotels, and shopping while still honoring its past.

Walking the High Line during the holiday season was especially magical. The mix of greenery, city views, and winter air made it feel like we were experiencing New York from an entirely new perspective.

A Personal Connection to the Experience

One of the most meaningful parts of the tour was learning about how Foods of NY Tours was started and how deeply the company values storytelling, education, and community. This wasn’t just a tour, it was an experience rooted in passion and purpose.

We connected with Cindy and the tour in ways we didn’t expect. Her knowledge, warmth, and sense of humor made us feel like locals, not tourists. It’s rare to walk away from an experience feeling both entertained and genuinely educated, but this tour delivered on both.

Elevating Underrepresented Communities
Here at Bhlen, we’re all about elevating underrepresented voices and fostering a sense of community. Many immigrant-owned, LGBTQ+, and women-owned businesses don’t have the tools or budget to promote themselves efficiently. We have the tools to properly connect these businesses, putting them in front of travelers at hotels and seasoned locals alike–at no cost to the business whatsoever. We have the tools to create unique Bhlen links, which use geographical data to deliver real-time results to users based on their location and interests. Check out the one we made for Black-Owned Businesses to get an idea of what we can do. Your funding and support helps us create more guides, reach new cities, and put the spotlight on more of these businesses that deserve it most.

Helping Local Businesses Through the Seasons
Seasonally, some businesses struggle during slow periods. Minority-owned and immigrant-owned businesses are sometimes the hardest hit. That’s why we use certain times of year to highlight and promote businesses, helping drive SEO and visibility for these businesses when they need it most. Our blogs do an excellent job of calling attention to these businesses for timely occasions, like Hispanic Heritage Month. During the winter or other slow periods, web traffic and foot traffic can help keep these businesses afloat. Bhlen helps put these businesses on the map. Your support of our Kickstarter helps fund our blog and the promotion of these guides during these times of year.

Being Inclusive with Low Tech Barriers
Unlike many similar tech startups, our product does not require an app. For that reason, we see ourselves as more inclusive by removing this barrier. Older individuals or those who are not tech natives may feel less comfortable downloading a new app. Many of those in under-served communities prefer a mobile-friendly, app-less solution so they can view a guide without having to download anything. By supporting our Kickstarter, you will help keep our platform running smoothly–and help ensure that it is easily accessible to all.

Elevating Community Events
One of our favorite things about Bhlen is that we elevate local community events and culture in a place as diverse as the DC metro area. There is a wonderful wealth of culture and diversity around us, much of which goes unnoticed. Grassroots gatherings and events often have little visibility from the larger community. The Winery at La Grange (Haymarket, VA)

One of the oldest wineries in the region–La Grange dates back to the 1600’s as a part of Robert Carter’s Bull Run Tract. George Green built a red brick building around 1790, and it still stands today. Prince William County has a long, celebrated history of winemaking in the region. As early as the 1800s, Christian Heineken was making wine at Mill Park near Haymarket, and nearby Robert Portner won an award for a port-style Virginia Wine at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Today, the Winery at La Grange offers a wide variety of reds, whites, and specialty wines, including an aromatic port and an award-winning Petit Manseng.

Stone Tower Winery (Leesburg, VA)

Stone Tower is a Loudoun County classic. Nestled on a mountain down a stone path, you really have to see the views of this winery to believe them. Their Harvest Barn offers the original educational wine tasting experience, and they welcome walk-ins for groups under 8 in their expansive space. Although they do not allow outside food, they offer their own flavorful menu of food options for wine enjoyers. Their Tower View room is an exclusive perk for wine club members–which you might want to become once you’ve had a sip of their unforgettable wine.

Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard (Dickerson, MD)

If you want to feel like you’re drinking French wine without leaving the DMV, then look no further. Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard in Maryland embraces the perks of their unique microclimate at the base of a mountain by growing French vinifera clones grafted to American roots. Since 2006, making wine has been more than an art for viticulturist Lucie Morton; it has also been a science. Come check out the completely one-of-a-kind whites and reds, some of which have been aged in French oak barrels. It’s a little romantic sip of France without the stress of finding parking at Dulles.

Creek’s Edge Winery (Lovettesville, VA)

As the name suggests, this winery in the historic neighborhood of Taylorstown sits on the banks of Catoctin Creek. With its dramatic exposed-beam interiors, stone archway, and waterfall, it’s no wonder this breathtaking winery doubles as a wedding venue. Beyond their mouth-watering charcuterie boards, they also offer a full gourmet food menu from their kitchen. Their event calendar is packed with exciting live music events. What could be better than sipping on award-winning wine in the sunshine, jamming out to covers of your favorite tunes on a summer day?

Negus Winery (Alexandria, Virginia)

Negus Winery is an Ethiopian-owned Winery, Meadery, and Tasting Room–in fact, it is the first and only honey wine tasting room in the US. Master winemaker Gize Negussie was formerly a successful beer maker, brewing beers inspired by his homeland. When the pandemic hit, he began experimenting with creating Tej (honey wine). With his mother’s help, he worked to preserve the traditional craft of making honey wine while infusing it with modern twists. After opening in fall 2023, Negus Winery, Meadery, and Tasting Room is now open to guests to enjoy tastings and flights, and an array of bottles of honey wine are available for purchase.

Show Up for World Pride 2025 In DC

Here at Bhlen, we are all about elevating underrepresented voices and bringing our users together for unique experiences. That’s why we’re showing our support for the LGBTQ+ community with a Bhlen Link for World Pride, a renowned international event happening right here in DC this year. 2025 also marks the 50th annual Pride celebration in DC, and this monumental occasion will represent the community’s ongoing fight for justice, visibility, and equal rights. International superstar Shakira will be bringing the Latin beats (you can trust her–her hips don’t lie!), Troye Sivan will be turning things up, and there will even be an appearance from OG drag legend RuPaul. Cancel your plans–Pride is the plan. Whether you’re part of this fabulous community or an ally, here are a few events where you can pull up to the party and fly your rainbow flag.

Perreo Vieja Escuela at Public Bar Live (Northwest)

Kick things off on May 17th, the very first day of World Pride, in the most absolutely DC fashion: drinking at a rooftop bar. It’ll be history in the making with a view of iconic buildings as far as the eye can see. Meanwhile, you’ll sip cocktails, make new friends, and come together as a community. DJ Bambino and DJ Melina will be spinning old-school tunes for their theme of “Perreo Vieja Escuela.” The party starts at 10 PM and doesn’t stop until 3 in the morning. No FOMO, just YOLO.

Pre-Pride Tiki Boat Ride with Whitlows on Water (Wharf)

If you want to ring in Pride with a tropical twist, check out the Whitlows on Water Tiki Cruise on Saturday, May 24, from 6:30 – 8:30. You’ll set sail from the Wharf for an evening of celebrating love, justice, and diversity. Drinks are unlimited on board, so what are you waiting for? Snag a ticket before you miss the boat.

Havana Nights (Pride Edition) at STFU (Navy Yard)

Navy Yard’s favorite speakeasy, STFU, will be transforming into Cuba for the evening of June 6th. Celebrate Pride old-school Havana-style as you sip on hand-crafted cocktails and dance the rumba. Bring that vieja escuela energy by dressing in vibrant colors, fedoras, or whatever floats your boat–you do you, honey! Don’t ghost, come toast!

Arlington Pride (Crystal City)

Come out for the 4th Annual Arlington Pride at Hyatt Regency Crystal City on May 30 and 31st for an array of activities just as diverse as you are! In addition to everything happening in DC, Arlington is offering its own exciting lineup for those who are hoping to find community and allies in the Northern Virginia area. There will be Drag Brunch (because duh) and LGBTQ+ Speed Dating for anyone who is single and ready to mingle. Get ready to slay with a Drag Pageant hosted by Shi-Queeta Lee, and don’t miss Arlington’s very own Pride Festival on May 31. Time to show up and show out!

Post-Parade/Post-Protest Party at Ultrabar (Penn Quarter)

Celebrate the love, unity, and the LGBTQ+ trailblazers at Ultrabar, DC’s favorite multi-level nightclub. Join icons like Jackie Cox and DJ Alex Cohen, who will be bumping jams all evening. There will be a post-parade/post-protest on June 7th from 3-6 PM and a worldwide pregame on June 8 from 7-9 pm. Tickets are still available, but they won’t last long. March, dance, slay–repeat!

BLK Queer Film Festival at Howard University

If you’re looking for a quieter, more intellectual way to celebrate Pride, then the Center for Black Equity’s BLK Queer Film Festival at Howard University might be the perfect event for you. This free event takes place from 6-9 PM on May 27-29 at the Blackbird Digital Auditorium at Howard. On May 28th, they will be showing the award-winning film “All The Broken Pieces”, chronicling the trailblazing life of transgender activist Marissa Miller. On Thursday, May 29th, be sure to check out “Rafiki”, a Nigerian coming-of-age tale of two teenage girls whose friendship turns romantic as they try to navigate social and familial pressures. Grab your chosen family and grab your tissues, because some of these films are a downright profound experience.

Celebrate Vibrant Heritage: Black-Owned Restaurants in the DC Area

In an area as diverse as the DMV, there are endless ways to celebrate Black history month throughout February and all year long. From casual lunch offerings to upscale dining experiences, Black restaurateurs are serving up delicious meals that showcase the unique, vibrant heritage of African-Americans. The Continent DC (Downtown)
For a truly one-of-a-kind upscale experience, check out the upscale West African restaurant, The Continent DC. From the decor to the music to unforgettable food, the founders are executing a vision of authenticity true to the continent of Africa. Part of their menu is aptly titled “Back Home” and offers hard-to-find staples such as Liberian Cassava Leaf and Spicy Goat Pepper Soup. The Continent serves up amazing specials on classics like jollof rice and chicken suya for their daily happy hour, and they are also known for offering a wide array of delicious, refreshing cocktails. Come join Bhlen to celebrate Black History Month at The Continent DC on Thursday, February 20 from 3-7 PM. DJ Ty One will be creating a vibe with his one-of-a-kind remixes, and the bar will be serving a happy hour to remember.

saladworks (Union Market)
saladworks–aka the original salad entree restaurant–started as a humble salad shop in Cherry Hill, NJ in 1986. To say the salad-eating movement caught on would be an understatement. Now they have eateries in 23 states and the District of Columbia and they offer over 60 salad ingredients to create a flavor as unique as your cravings. In addition to their signature build-your-own salads, they serve wraps, paninis, and soups. The DC restaurant is located in the NoMa district of Washington DC, near Union Market, and owner Clifford Lovett could not be prouder of this thriving business. Come join Bhlen at saladworks on February 13 from 4pm to 8pm to celebrate Black History month with a healthy, delicious meal.

Ben’s Chili Bowl (U Street and other locations)
This history of Black entrepreneurs in DC would be incomplete without mentioning Ben’s Chili Bowl. The spot opened in an old silent movie house in 1958 by Ben Ali and Virginia Rollins, who married each other just 7 weeks later. When it opened, U Street was known locally as “Black Broadway,” and many jazz legends stopped in to eat at Ben’s Chili Bowl when they were performing nearby. It has remained a mainstay, surviving civil unrest following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the construction of the U Street Metro, which forced many nearby businesses to close. Ben passed away in 2009, and the restaurant has since been run by his sons, who have gone on to open new locations, including one in Nats Park and an upscale restaurant/bar called Ben’s Next Door.

Georgia Brown’s (Downtown DC)
True to its southern name, Georgia Brown’s combines the style and class of a club straight out of New Orleans during the jazz age (and it has a grand piano to prove it). It opened in 1993, and has made a name as a perfect place to impress a date. The menu offers the real deal as far as soul food goes, from catfish to fried green tomatoes. Check out live music every Wednesday and the first Friday of every month from 7-10 PM.
