ICYMI: Bhlen, your go-to trusted source for local guides, has launched its own Kickstarter to help support underrepresented communities. Now is the time to get in at the ground level and show some love to a forum that creates visibility for local businesses.

Elevating Underrepresented Communities
Here at Bhlen, we’re all about elevating underrepresented voices and fostering a sense of community. Many immigrant-owned, LGBTQ+, and women-owned businesses don’t have the tools or budget to promote themselves efficiently. We have the tools to properly connect these businesses, putting them in front of travelers at hotels and seasoned locals alike–at no cost to the business whatsoever. We have the tools to create unique Bhlen links, which use geographical data to deliver real-time results to users based on their location and interests. Check out the one we made for Black-Owned Businesses to get an idea of what we can do. Your funding and support helps us create more guides, reach new cities, and put the spotlight on more of these businesses that deserve it most.

Helping Local Businesses Through the Seasons
Seasonally, some businesses struggle during slow periods. Minority-owned and immigrant-owned businesses are sometimes the hardest hit. That’s why we use certain times of year to highlight and promote businesses, helping drive SEO and visibility for these businesses when they need it most. Our blogs do an excellent job of calling attention to these businesses for timely occasions, like Hispanic Heritage Month. During the winter or other slow periods, web traffic and foot traffic can help keep these businesses afloat. Bhlen helps put these businesses on the map. Your support of our Kickstarter helps fund our blog and the promotion of these guides during these times of year.

Being Inclusive with Low Tech Barriers
Unlike many similar tech startups, our product does not require an app. For that reason, we see ourselves as more inclusive by removing this barrier. Older individuals or those who are not tech natives may feel less comfortable downloading a new app. Many of those in under-served communities prefer a mobile-friendly, app-less solution so they can view a guide without having to download anything. By supporting our Kickstarter, you will help keep our platform running smoothly–and help ensure that it is easily accessible to all.

Elevating Community Events
One of our favorite things about Bhlen is that we elevate local community events and culture in a place as diverse as the DC metro area. There is a wonderful wealth of culture and diversity around us, much of which goes unnoticed. Grassroots gatherings and events often have little visibility from the larger community. We create customized guides for these events to help connect and bring community members together. Users are able to use our platform to become connected to real-time events that are happening around them. Check out the blog posts we created about celebrating Diwali around the DC area and events for World Pride 2025. With your support, we can elevate even more community events, eventually expanding to include events in more cities.

Empowering Others to Share What Matters to Them

Enter: winery season. What better time of year to take a trip out to the rolling hills of wine country and slow down for a day? With our Wine Season Bhlen Link, we’ve got you covered!

The Winery at Bull Run (Centreville, VA)

The Winery at Bull Run is the closest winery to Washington, DC–so if you want to escape to a picturesque vineyard without breaking the bank on an Uber, it might be a great option for you! Furthermore, with its proximity to Bull Run, it’s steeped in history, and the split rail fences surrounding the property set the scene for a rustic time. Windridge Vineyards (Darnestown, MD)

This family business has been creating premium wines on its estate for over 50 years. The Winery at La Grange (Haymarket, VA)

One of the oldest wineries in the region–La Grange dates back to the 1600’s as a part of Robert Carter’s Bull Run Tract. George Green built a red brick building around 1790, and it still stands today. Prince William County has a long, celebrated history of winemaking in the region. As early as the 1800s, Christian Heineken was making wine at Mill Park near Haymarket, and nearby Robert Portner won an award for a port-style Virginia Wine at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Today, the Winery at La Grange offers a wide variety of reds, whites, and specialty wines, including an aromatic port and an award-winning Petit Manseng.

Stone Tower Winery (Leesburg, VA)

Stone Tower is a Loudoun County classic. Nestled on a mountain down a stone path, you really have to see the views of this winery to believe them. Their Harvest Barn offers the original educational wine tasting experience, and they welcome walk-ins for groups under 8 in their expansive space. Although they do not allow outside food, they offer their own flavorful menu of food options for wine enjoyers. Their Tower View room is an exclusive perk for wine club members–which you might want to become once you’ve had a sip of their unforgettable wine.

Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard (Dickerson, MD)

If you want to feel like you’re drinking French wine without leaving the DMV, then look no further. Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard in Maryland embraces the perks of their unique microclimate at the base of a mountain by growing French vinifera clones grafted to American roots. Since 2006, making wine has been more than an art for viticulturist Lucie Morton; it has also been a science. Come check out the completely one-of-a-kind whites and reds, some of which have been aged in French oak barrels. It’s a little romantic sip of France without the stress of finding parking at Dulles.

Creek’s Edge Winery (Lovettesville, VA)

As the name suggests, this winery in the historic neighborhood of Taylorstown sits on the banks of Catoctin Creek. With its dramatic exposed-beam interiors, stone archway, and waterfall, it’s no wonder this breathtaking winery doubles as a wedding venue. Beyond their mouth-watering charcuterie boards, they also offer a full gourmet food menu from their kitchen. Their event calendar is packed with exciting live music events. What could be better than sipping on award-winning wine in the sunshine, jamming out to covers of your favorite tunes on a summer day?

Negus Winery (Alexandria, Virginia)

Negus Winery is an Ethiopian-owned Winery, Meadery, and Tasting Room–in fact, it is the first and only honey wine tasting room in the US. Master winemaker Gize Negussie was formerly a successful beer maker, brewing beers inspired by his homeland. When the pandemic hit, he began experimenting with creating Tej (honey wine). With his mother’s help, he worked to preserve the traditional craft of making honey wine while infusing it with modern twists. After opening in fall 2023, Negus Winery, Meadery, and Tasting Room is now open to guests to enjoy tastings and flights, and an array of bottles of honey wine are available for purchase.

Show Up for World Pride 2025 In DC

Here at Bhlen, we are all about elevating underrepresented voices and bringing our users together for unique experiences. That’s why we’re showing our support for the LGBTQ+ community with a Bhlen Link for World Pride, a renowned international event happening right here in DC this year. 2025 also marks the 50th annual Pride celebration in DC, and this monumental occasion will represent the community’s ongoing fight for justice, visibility, and equal rights. International superstar Shakira will be bringing the Latin beats (you can trust her–her hips don’t lie!), Troye Sivan will be turning things up, and there will even be an appearance from OG drag legend RuPaul. Cancel your plans–Pride is the plan. Whether you’re part of this fabulous community or an ally, here are a few events where you can pull up to the party and fly your rainbow flag.

Perreo Vieja Escuela at Public Bar Live (Northwest)

Kick things off on May 17th, the very first day of World Pride, in the most absolutely DC fashion: drinking at a rooftop bar. It’ll be history in the making with a view of iconic buildings as far as the eye can see. Meanwhile, you’ll sip cocktails, make new friends, and come together as a community. DJ Bambino and DJ Melina will be spinning old-school tunes for their theme of “Perreo Vieja Escuela.” The party starts at 10 PM and doesn’t stop until 3 in the morning. No FOMO, just YOLO.

Pre-Pride Tiki Boat Ride with Whitlows on Water (Wharf)

If you want to ring in Pride with a tropical twist, check out the Whitlows on Water Tiki Cruise on Saturday, May 24, from 6:30 – 8:30. You’ll set sail from the Wharf for an evening of celebrating love, justice, and diversity. Drinks are unlimited on board, so what are you waiting for? Snag a ticket before you miss the boat.

Havana Nights (Pride Edition) at STFU (Navy Yard)

Navy Yard’s favorite speakeasy, STFU, will be transforming into Cuba for the evening of June 6th. Celebrate Pride old-school Havana-style as you sip on hand-crafted cocktails and dance the rumba. Bring that vieja escuela energy by dressing in vibrant colors, fedoras, or whatever floats your boat–you do you, honey! Don’t ghost, come toast!

Arlington Pride (Crystal City)

Come out for the 4th Annual Arlington Pride at Hyatt Regency Crystal City on May 30 and 31st for an array of activities just as diverse as you are! In addition to everything happening in DC, Arlington is offering its own exciting lineup for those who are hoping to find community and allies in the Northern Virginia area. There will be Drag Brunch (because duh) and LGBTQ+ Speed Dating for anyone who is single and ready to mingle. Get ready to slay with a Drag Pageant hosted by Shi-Queeta Lee, and don’t miss Arlington’s very own Pride Festival on May 31. Time to show up and show out!

Post-Parade/Post-Protest Party at Ultrabar (Penn Quarter)

Celebrate the love, unity, and the LGBTQ+ trailblazers at Ultrabar, DC’s favorite multi-level nightclub. Join icons like Jackie Cox and DJ Alex Cohen, who will be bumping jams all evening. There will be a post-parade/post-protest on June 7th from 3-6 PM and a worldwide pregame on June 8 from 7-9 pm. Tickets are still available, but they won’t last long. March, dance, slay–repeat!

BLK Queer Film Festival at Howard University

If you’re looking for a quieter, more intellectual way to celebrate Pride, then the Center for Black Equity’s BLK Queer Film Festival at Howard University might be the perfect event for you. This free event takes place from 6-9 PM on May 27-29 at the Blackbird Digital Auditorium at Howard. On May 28th, they will be showing the award-winning film “All The Broken Pieces”, chronicling the trailblazing life of transgender activist Marissa Miller. On Thursday, May 29th, be sure to check out “Rafiki”, a Nigerian coming-of-age tale of two teenage girls whose friendship turns romantic as they try to navigate social and familial pressures. Grab your chosen family and grab your tissues, because some of these films are a downright profound experience.

Celebrate Vibrant Heritage: Black-Owned Restaurants in the DC Area

In an area as diverse as the DMV, there are endless ways to celebrate Black history month throughout February and all year long. From casual lunch offerings to upscale dining experiences, Black restaurateurs are serving up delicious meals that showcase the unique, vibrant heritage of African-Americans. Bhlen is a proud supporter of Black businesses–check out our dynamic list of Black-Owned businesses near you!

The Continent DC (Downtown)
For a truly one-of-a-kind upscale experience, check out the upscale West African restaurant, The Continent DC. From the decor to the music to unforgettable food, the founders are executing a vision of authenticity true to the continent of Africa. Part of their menu is aptly titled “Back Home” and offers hard-to-find staples such as Liberian Cassava Leaf and Spicy Goat Pepper Soup. The Continent serves up amazing specials on classics like jollof rice and chicken suya for their daily happy hour, and they are also known for offering a wide array of delicious, refreshing cocktails. Come join Bhlen to celebrate Black History Month at The Continent DC on Thursday, February 20 from 3-7 PM. DJ Ty One will be creating a vibe with his one-of-a-kind remixes, and the bar will be serving a happy hour to remember.

saladworks (Union Market)
saladworks–aka the original salad entree restaurant–started as a humble salad shop in Cherry Hill, NJ in 1986. To say the salad-eating movement caught on would be an understatement. Now they have eateries in 23 states and the District of Columbia and they offer over 60 salad ingredients to create a flavor as unique as your cravings. In addition to their signature build-your-own salads, they serve wraps, paninis, and soups. The DC restaurant is located in the NoMa district of Washington DC, near Union Market, and owner Clifford Lovett could not be prouder of this thriving business. Come join Bhlen at saladworks on February 13 from 4pm to 8pm to celebrate Black History month with a healthy, delicious meal.

Ben’s Chili Bowl (U Street and other locations)
This history of Black entrepreneurs in DC would be incomplete without mentioning Ben’s Chili Bowl. The spot opened in an old silent movie house in 1958 by Ben Ali and Virginia Rollins, who married each other just 7 weeks later. When it opened, U Street was known locally as “Black Broadway,” and many jazz legends stopped in to eat at Ben’s Chili Bowl when they were performing nearby. It has remained a mainstay, surviving civil unrest following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and the construction of the U Street Metro, which forced many nearby businesses to close. Ben passed away in 2009, and the restaurant has since been run by his sons, who have gone on to open new locations, including one in Nats Park and an upscale restaurant/bar called Ben’s Next Door.

Georgia Brown’s (Downtown DC)
True to its southern name, Georgia Brown’s combines the style and class of a club straight out of New Orleans during the jazz age (and it has a grand piano to prove it). It opened in 1993, and has made a name as a perfect place to impress a date. The menu offers the real deal as far as soul food goes, from catfish to fried green tomatoes. Check out live music every Wednesday and the first Friday of every month from 7-10 PM.

Be Part of History: Inauguration 2025 in DC

Witness history in the making by visiting Washington, DC for the 60th presidential inauguration as Donald Trump and JD Vance are sworn in on the West Front of the United States Capitol on January 20, 2025. This will mark the second ever non-consecutive re-inauguration of a U.S. President (the first being Grover Cleveland in 1893). The festivities include a parade beforehand, the swearing in ceremony (hospitality upgrades available), and the swanky Inaugural Ball in the evening. Downtown DC Holiday Market (Penn Quarter)
The Downtown DC Holiday Market is taking over Penn Quarter-Chinatown for year 20! This year, a new market operator, The Makers Show, has breathed new life into this DC holiday classic. This year, expect over 100 vendors, including treats, s’mores, empanadas, and more. Enjoy the Sounds of the City as live music will be available almost every day starting December 19th. Bring the kiddos to Reindeer Games, a fun area of games and activities for children. The Winter Chalet at Hotel Monaco will offer holiday-forward cocktails, and don’t forget to snap a pic at the “Chilling with My Snowmies” photo installation!

DC Holiday Market (Dupont Circle)
DC Holiday Market (formerly Downtown Market) is returning to Dupont Circle with its tradition of supporting small, local businesses. The market runs through December 23rd on the 1500 block of 19th Street NW (just above Dupont Circle Park). More than 30 local businesses, from artisan handcrafts to edible treats, will be featured, creating the perfect gift-giving opportunity. Be sure to check out Migue’s Mini Donuts and The Capital Candy Jar for a sweet treat, and to embrace the aroma of the season, pop over to Smell of Love Candles.

Holiday Market 2024 at Del Ray Artisans Gallery (Del Ray, Alexandria, VA)
The 29th Annual Del Ray Artisans Holiday Market will run from December 6–22, on Fridays 6-9pm, Saturdays 9am-5pm, and Sundays 11am-5pm. Del Ray is known for its thriving art scene, and the local artisans will be showing off their finest handiwork, from mosaics to photography to pottery and even wearables like jewelry. This market will reside in the Del Ray Artisans gallery in the Nicholas A. Colasanto Center, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, Virginia 22301. In the spirit of giving, Del Ray Artisans will be collecting new (or like-new) art supplies during market hours for artists affected by Hurricane Helene. This is a free event.

Lucketts Store (Leesburg, VA)
There isn’t a place that captures the spirit of Christmas Past as well as Lucketts Store. Just outside Leesburg, Lucketts Store makes a fun day trip that’s worth the drive. Shoppers can find vintage, one-of-a-kind items, in a three-story building with outdoor pavilions housing 25 designers and vendors. The building has a history as unique as the vintage finds within it: previously a general store, a Post Office, and a family farmhouse, Lucketts Store fell into disrepair in the 90s. In 1996, it was rescued by Suzanne and Pat Eblen, where it has been thriving as a place that offers a fresh new spin on vintage furnishings. During Christmas, the Lucketts Store transforms back into a holiday farmhouse of yesteryear, and a crackling fire outside with unique holiday murals helps light the path. To address space constraints, this is a ticketed event, but tickets are not required if you are just coming to shop.

Baltimore Christmas Village (Baltimore, MD)
As far as authenticity goes, nothing compares to the Christmas village in Baltimore, which feels like a scene straight out of Germany. 2024 will mark its 11th winter on the Waterfront of the Inner Harbor from the Maryland Science Center to the Baltimore Visitor Center. Over 60 local and international vendors will take up residency in heated tents, and warm holiday drinks will bring cozy winter cheer (35 foot Glühwein tower, anyone?) Brat Summer may be over, but Bratapfel winter is just beginning, and the signature baked apple pie is now available as a unique Glühwein flavor. Bull Run Festival of Lights (Centreville, VA)
This ticketed, drive-through event is a Northern Virginia classic and the best part of all? You can experience it all from the comfort of your heated car. The multi-colored holiday light displays feature an array of exciting characters and almost give the vibes of Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road. Add the song “Jingle Bell Rock” and a to-go mug of hot cocoa, and you’ve created a core memory. Meadowlark Walk of Lights (Vienna, VA)
If you’d prefer seeing lights up close, bundle up and check out Meadowlark Botanical Gardens Walk of Lights. This timed, ticketed event features a dressed-up version of the lovely gardens with a fun, colorful holiday twist that kids will surely enjoy. This is a dog-friendly event, so don’t feel like Fido has to miss out on the fun–just be sure to account for him with a dog ticket!

Lights on the Bay (Annapolis, MD)
This two-mile drive along the bay in Sandy Point State Park features over 70 animated and stationary light displays. Enjoy the Chesapeake Bay breeze and a view of the Bay Bridge in the background. The proceeds benefit the SPCA of Maryland, and there are even a few exciting Lights & Leashes events, where you can enjoy the lights while walking with your pet. There are kiosks where you can buy snacks for the ride like popcorn, and when it’s going to a good cause–why not treat yourself, too?

ZooLights (Washington, DC)
The 16th annual Zoo Lights is sure to be a hit for all members of the family. Check out illuminated lantern animals, walk down rainbow light displays, and jam out to musical performances. The kids will love a ride on the Conservation Carousel or train, and don’t forget to check out a mouth-watering array of seasonal treats! Please note: no actual animals will be featured during ZooLights, as they are required to get a full night’s rest. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $6 for all guests over 2.

Holiday Walk of Lights at Neabsco Regional Park (Woodbridge, VA)
The third annual iteration of this magnificent event is astonishingly free for all patrons! Revel in quiet nature as you see this .625-mile boardwalk lit up with holiday figures. To make parking a cinch, take the shuttle from Rippon Middle School. Some nights have an adjacent holiday market, carolers, or even holiday characters that children will enjoy meeting in person. The walk is stroller, wheelchair, and pet-friendly, so bring the whole family.

There’s something heartwarming about buying locally made products from hardworking entrepreneurs in your community. Melody Warnick, author of This Is Where You Belong: Finding Home Wherever You Are articulated it perfectly in a blog post on why she loves Small Business Saturday: “I’m trying to prioritize locally made purchases, even when they’re slightly more expensive, because they make me happier.” Indeed, there is a shared goal for people on both ends of the transaction: they want their community to have variety, flavor, and its own vibrant culture.

Small businesses give a place its look and feel, acting as an antithesis of the sameness of boring chain stores that can be found in every town. Since local businesses keep 38% of their revenue within the community, shopping at a local shop is a way of giving back to the place you call home. Small Business Saturday–a breath of fresh air after the rabid consumerism of its predecessor, Black Friday–is centered around doing just that. In DC, Maryland, and Virginia, shopkeepers on every Main Street are just waiting for loyal customers to treat them with that extra attention to detail that they won’t find in big-box stores.

SHELTER is a Union Market modern jewelry shop that specializes in independently made jewelry. The store prides itself in offering work from underrepresented designers and showcasing unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. They also offer custom pieces and wedding/engagement bands. REWILD – Shaw, Capitol Hill, Ballston, Cabin John

How well do the folks at Rewild know plants? So much so that the US Botanical Garden has partnered with them to create a unique museum store where patrons can bring an inspired little piece of the garden home with them. Perfect for every #plantparent in your life, REWILD’s website encourages customers to “spread joy, naturally.” The staff is made up of houseplant lovers who offer tons of free advice to aspiring plant parents. Even if your thumb isn’t already green, REWILD is on a mission to help you get there.

With four locations including Georgetown, The Wharf, Union Market, and Canpoy Embassy Row, Shop Made in DC’s mission is to showcase the DC artisan scene. Each location offers a variety of products, from candles to home decor to stationery, all made right in the District. Their gallery in Georgetown is home to a group of rotating artists, and they offer art classes, too. Shop Made in DC is the perfect place to pick out a holiday gift with the right amount of local flavor.

Capitol Hill Books (Capitol Hill, DC)

A decades-old handwritten sign hangs next to the cash register at the entrance to Capitol Hill Books: “Words Not Spoken Here: OMG. Totally. Amazon. Kindle…” This sets the tone for the old-school experience that is Capitol Hill Books, a used bookstore and bibliophile’s paradise. Patrons will feel as if they’re on an adventure (or in a mystery novel, if that’s their genre of choice) as they navigate the narrow staircases of an old row house, every nook and cranny–even the kitchen sink–covered in books. In 2018, a group of employees purchased the store from the second owner, and they’ve dedicated themselves to keeping Capitol Hill Books a gem of the district.

Fair Trade Roots (Arlington, VA)

Located in a walking stretch of the cozy neighborhood of Westover, Fair Trade Roots is part adorable cafe, part destination to other cultures via lovely handmade goods. Upon entering the shop, one’s senses are first hit with the wonderful aroma of espresso and pastries, then with a harmonious rainbow of decorations, from lovely Ugandan raffia baskets to twinkling Turkish lamps. The owner takes pride in offering fair wages for ethically sourced products and offering unique pieces that are sure to brighten any home.

Here. a pop-up shop (Annapolis, MD)

Here. is a pop-up boutique originally founded by longtime Annapolis buds El Lunay and Amy Altenburg. Since its inception in 2013, there have been 50 popups in various vacant locations around Annapolis. The location rotates, but for the current holiday season, Here. calls 14 Church Circle in downtown Annapolis home. The pop-up stays open for 10-20 days at a time and showcases work from local artists and designers, from photography to apparel to furniture. During the holiday season, they’re open from 10 am to 6 pm daily, and on Small Business Saturday, they are offering free gifts with a minimum purchase as well as free bubbly and sweets to everyone who walks through the door.

Election night is coming to the DC area next Tuesday, November 5. In an area brimming with political staffers and government employees, it’s safe to say that locals are invested in politics, and there’s a lot riding on this election. Whether this means you’ll be anxiously refreshing your feed or looking for an excuse to party, the DMV knows how to celebrate election season like nowhere else in the US.

Lincoln Restaurant (Downtown DC)

If you’re looking to get the party started early, head to Lincoln Restaurant from 4 to 5 for a complimentary buffet. After that, TVs will be on all night and there will be food specials and specialty cocktails with politically-charged names, like “The Red Elephant in the Room.” There will even be an Abe Lincoln impersonator to help welcome in the 47th President.

ARTECHOUSE (Southwest DC)

Election night can bring a lot of stress to those who are invested in politics. For those looking for an aura of calm, check out experimental art studio ARTECHOUSE, who will be hosting something a little unconventional. With “I Voted” stickers, patrons will get $10 of general admission to the immersive art experience set in a digital seascape, including an XR cocktail happy hour from 4 – 10.

DC Young Republicans Host at Dirty Water

For those wishing they could see the DMV turn red, Dirty Water is the place to be. Mingle with other young Republicans with an open bar for $25, including Bud and Shock Top Drafts and hard iced teas. The event invitation reads, “all patriots are welcome.” The evening will go from 6:30 until a winner is declared.

Union Pub (Capitol Hill, DC)

If insanely long lines to drink at Union Pub during the debates were any indicator, then everyone in the 202 is bound to be at Union Pub on November 5. This Capitol Hill favorite will have presidential-themed drinks and other specials, along with election coverage all night.

Shaw’s Tavern is hosting a one-of-a-kind election viewing experience for those who want to go all out. For $99, patrons get access to a 4-hour open bar, a buffet, and circulating apps. All night, TVs (with sound!) will be playing election coverage. Tickets are available on EventBrite.

Election Night Watch Party at Merry Pin (Takoma, DC)

For the crafty DC resident, Merry Pin in Takoma is the place to be. In a time that brings about anxiety, de-stress by making crafts with fellow DIY gods and goddesses. They will project the election coverage on a screen, and anyone working on a Kamala Harris craft will get 10% off food or beverages. The event is free, but RSVPS are required for upstairs seating.

Boundary Stone (Bloomingdale, DC)

The neighborhood pub in Bloomingdale will be running an all-night happy hour while airing election coverage starting at 8. Bartenders will be bringing back a fan favorite called “Kamala’s Coconut Daiquiri” along with other themed drinks, including the “Palate Cleanser Shot.” Reservations are recommended.

Busboys and poets emphasize their commitment to social justice and hope for a brighter future in their event details for their Election Viewing Party. Penn Social is known for bringing out the inner child in us all, and Election Night is no different. This family-friendly event will be serving specials like $2 off Port City Optimal Wit and $4 off Cheesy Bread.
